Brother Cecilian Amedy (Joseph Long)


Brother Amedy died suddenly in 1984 of a massive heart attack in a hospital in Pasadena, Texas, at age 69. He was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, on October 18, 1914, and entered the junior novitiate at De La Salle in Lafayette, Louisiana, in 1927. He received the brother’s garb in the novitiate there on August 14, 1931, and studied in the scholasticate at Sacred Heart Training College in Las Vegas, New Mexico, 1932-1933. He taught at St. Michael’s College (high school) in Santa Fe, New Mexico, 1933-1941, Cathedral High School in El Paso, Texas, 1941-1943, St. Paul’s College (high school) in Covington, Louisiana, 1943-1944, again at St. Michael’s in Santa Fe, 1944-1945, and at Kirwin High School in Galveston, Texas, 1945-1952. He was sent to Cathedral High School in Lafayette as assistant principal, 1952-1956, and then was the director of studies for the brothers of the district one year. He had the fall semester in 1957 off for a personal renewal program in Compton, Canada, and was sent to St. Michael’s

College (later named College of Santa Fe) in Santa Fe in January 1958. He was sent back to Cathedral in El Paso in 1959 and spent the remaining 25 years of his life there, except for the year 1963-1964 at De La Salle in New Orleans. He was teaching full-time in El Paso when he died suddenly during a visit to one of his former students in Pasadena.
